Year 9 GCSE Summer Assignment
Over the summer holidays, we would like you to complete the following work to the best of your ability. Bring in your artwork on your first Art lesson back after the summer holidays. 1. National Portrait Gallery Over the holidays, visit the National Portrait Gallery in Central London. Spend time in the main gallery as well as visiting the free exhibition ‘BP Portrait Awards’. http://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/exhibitions/bp-portrait-award-2014.php There are some amazing portrait paintings on display. Have a really good look around the exhibition. - Complete a minimum of four first-hand A5 tonal drawings at the gallery. Spend 20-30 minutes on each drawing. Spend time adding detail and accuracy. Write down the name of the artist/artwork and date created. - Buy a postcard/s from the gallery and write on the back your likes/dislikes of the exhibition and why. Try and add as much detail as possible. Discuss different artworks that you enjoyed looking at. There are also free taster sessions, drop-in drawing sessions and summer schools at the NPG this summer – go along if you can and bring your work to school in September! 2. Portrait Drawings Complete four A5 drawings of friends or family over the holidays or even self-portrait drawings. Spend time trying to capture the portrait in particular and the facial expressions. Try and accurately depict the areas of light/dark and shadow with your pencil. You may do these drawings from photographs or you may do first-hand drawings, asking people to sit still for the period you are drawing. You could attempt to draw in different materials such as pencil (HB/2B/4B) or fine liner or a biro for example. |
